CUSHIONING MATERIALS - PUR FOAMS

Polyurethane or PUR foams are first choice for specific cushion needs in foot orthotic treatment. PUR cushions are open-cell structured foams that have viscoelastic, rebouncing properties and are free of PVC, latex, and solvents. Open-cell foams contain pores, connected to each other and filled with air, which is being pressed out when loaded and flows back into the cells when offloaded during the gait pattern.

While polyethylene foams or standard EVAs used with foot orthotics quickly lose their thickness, elasticity and energy absorption capacity during the permanent deformation, the PUR’s open-cell structure remains intact, resists compression and rebounces back to the original material thickness. Therefore, PUR cushions can absorb impact shocks longer and more efficient as well as maintain the total contact to the foot’s plantar side. However, soft PUR foams on foot orthotics absorb moisture with the known, unpleasant side effects. A microbial protection helps to prevent or delay the growth of stain- and odor-causing bacteria and mildew. In comparison to EVA foams, soft PUR has a poor thermal molding ability and cannot maintain its shape without a sufficient backing material.

Perpedes’ self-produced glass and carbon fiber composite orthotic shells and blanks are famous for their unique supporting qualities for challenged feet. However, the combination with high quality PUR foams used in our outstanding bi-laminated DRYFEET+ top covers is going to make your foot orthotic treatment truly exceptional.
